Sunflower Hearts are sunflower seeds that are dehulled to leave just the edible heart, so there's no waste or mess to clear up, they are nutritious, high in oils and energy and appeal to a large variety of wild birds, particularly the smaller species such as blue tits which must eat a quarter of their body weight in food per day to survive the cold weather.
We don't sell confectionary hearts that are much poorer in nutrition, our sunflower hearts are high in beneficial mono and polyunsaturated fats, high in protein, vitamin E an excellent antioxidant, cooper, folate, zinc, iron and phytochemicals. The inferior medium striped varieties that are dehulled and used in the confectionary trade and used in some wild bird food's simply don't come up to scratch!
As sunflower hearts are just the edible heart with the black outer husk removed, they offer wild birds a more easily available source of high energy food, as no time is spent cracking open husks, saving valuable energy, can be fed all year round, but are especially useful during the cold winter months and early spring when many of our native wild bird species are struggling to survive.
Sunflower kernels or hearts are eaten by nearly all of our native wild birds, even traditional non seed eaters have developed a taste for them, including Robins, Blackbirds and Thrushes, they are high in calories due to their oil content and there's no mess clear up under wild bird feeders and stands. So they are the ideal choice for keen gardeners who want the birds to visit, but do not want to clean up after them.
While black oil sunflower seeds and striped sunflower seeds are popular with many native species, sunflower hearts attract more wild birds than both of the seeds combined, as the beaks of some wild birds can not remove the husks of the seeds, consequently many high quality wild bird foods contain them to attract as many wild birds to your garden as possible!
