The parrot seed and fruit mix blends produced by Johnston and Jeff have been designed to keep parrots and parakeets in optimum condition throughout the year and use only the best quality seeds which are cleaned and blended to produce top quality parrot foods, with ingredients chosen to stimulate your birds senses and keep them healthy.

Parrots are highly susceptible to muck in their food, the higher the percentage of impurities the less they thrive. Both the parrot fruit mix and seed mix produced by Johnston and Jeff are cleaned to a purity level of 99.9% and all the fruits and nuts used in the parrot food varieties are human consumption grade.

Parrots are notoriously fussy birds, that have a tendency to selective feed from a blended parrot food or specialist extruded diet, only eating what they fancy and rejecting even beneficial seeds and fruits! That's why we don't stock bland parrot foods just tasty blended parrot seed and fruit mixes, as parrots are intelligent birds that need balanced levels of nutrients, but also richness and variety to create interest and prevent boredom.

The simply rule of thumb is to be creative, offer a variety of food, make sure it's fresh and clean your parrot's water bowl regularly to avoid the growth of bacteria, as parrots will often mix their food with water!

Whilst there are quite literally hundreds of parrot foods advertised on the internet, not all of them are made to the same high standards so we suggest you examine the ingredients list before ordering, but any complete parrot food or extruded diet such as Kaytee should provide your bird with a diversity of tastes, textures and smells, be palatable and nourishing and also importantly NOT contain any black sunflower seeds, as these are only suitable for wild birds that need high fat oil rich seeds to provide them with essential energy, both parrots and parakeets have no need for such high fat foods in their diets!

Practical parrot food advice

Regardless of variety all parrots, should be fed at least twice a day once in the morning and then in the afternoon or evening to help prevent your parrot from selectively eating all their favourites from their food, but also to give them something to look forward to each day, as just like a child they need a routine.

We always suggest to owners to supplement any extruded pellet diet, parrot seed or fruit mix with a variety of fresh foods to create interest, but also to ensure your parrot is receiving all the nutrients necessary to avoid health problems, including behavioural problems such as feather plucking that is usually caused by a lack of mental stimulation, poor housing and inadequate food. That's face it, would you like to eat the same diet, day in day out or would you like to spice things up and add a little something extra?

So we recommend to owners to mix a variety of vegetables, fresh fruit and nuts with their parrot food such as; carrots, peppers, spinach, apple, banana, grapes, almonds, brazils and walnuts to make them look forward to feeding time, arouse the senses and to help prevent boredom, for instance try feeding your parrot before you leave for work to keep them occupied in your absence.
