Dried Sprats are NOT my cup of tea, but dogs love them! Sprats are an affordable everyday treat that are nutritious and full of natural goodness, they are gently air dried to create a crunchy fishy treat for your dog that can be used as a food topper, snack before a meal, broken into smaller pieces and used as a training treat or perhaps used in an exploring game where your dog has to find the delicious sprats in your garden or if you don't mind your house.
If you're looking for a high value training treat, which puppies and dogs find irresistible for obedience training, recall or simply to reward good behaviour, you really can't go wrong with a 1kg bag of sprats. If you haven't heard the term 'high value reward' it's simply a term dog trainers use to describe a treat that will keep a dog or puppy focused on your commands, rather than distractions like other dogs, cats or people, which can be challenging especially for owners training outdoors.
Speaking from experience, the natural fishy scent of dried sprats is usually enough to motivate even stubborn dogs to look and listen to their owners, making training sessions less stressful and recall less of a battle, so do yourself a favour and ditch the traditional bland biscuit now!
What's more they are economical too and can be purchased from us in a bulk 500g, 1kg & 5kgs bag including 'FREE Mainland UK Delivery', saving you money! But how many sprats are in a 1kg bag you may ask? Well, I took a 2 x 1kg bags home on the weekend to find out, which my dogs Honey and Teddy loved, and I'm happy to report it's about 480 - 500 sprats approximately!
So, when you compare that to supermarket treats made from animal derivatives that's really good value for money! Adding these natural fishy dog treats to your dog's food by sprinkling them as a topper on dry kibble, wet food or raw mince will give your dog a nutritional boost helping to maintain joints, skin and coat condition. Sprats are amazing, these small fish belong to the herring family and are commonly fished for in the Baltic Sea, they are approximately 6 - 8cm in length, see images.
Feeding sprats to your dog is very entertaining too and if you've ever gone to a sea life show at a zoo or aquarian and watched visitors feed the sea lions fish, you'll know exactly what I mean as your dog(s) sit instantly or give both their paws without saying a single word, just like a performing seal to get the sprats as quickly as possible. My dogs simply love them and my rule of thumb especially for natural dog treats is the more aromatic the treats, the more your dogs will enjoy them!
We only sell premium whole sprats that are gently air dried, rather than baked as they are more nutritious and it preserves the natural flavour and aroma of the fish, which I'm sure your dog will appreciate! It also avoids them becoming too dehydrated and brittle, so you won't end up with a bag of shriveled-up bits.
Our bags of 1kg and 500g dried sprats contain NO artificial preservatives or additives and packed full of omega 3 fatty acids, they are low in saturated fat, low in salt and grain free too. Fish is a great source of B vitamins, phosphorous and selenium which helps support the immune system, but also helps the body store and release energy gradually over time. Feeding your dog sprats has a wealth of benefits which include a shiny coat, supple joints, decrease in itchy or dry skin, arthritic pain relief and helps maintain a healthy heart. All of these benefits can be attributed to the high levels of omega 3 fatty acids which are found in fish like sprats, which dogs can only obtain from their food.
Feeding Advice
There are no specific guidelines as to how many sprats you should give your dog daily, but dried sprats contain less moisture than frozen ones. So, you don't need feed as many dried sprats to get the beneficial amount of protein and fat contained in them. As a rough guide we suggest the following:
Small Dog - 1 to 5 sprats
Medium Dog - 2 to 7 sprats
Large Dog - 3 to 10 sprats
So as a rough guideline a large 1kg bag, will last a single medium sized dog between 68 - 240 days, depending on how generous you are or perhaps how well behaved they have been each day to receive these yummy fishy sprats!Nutritional Information & Benefits
