Yak chews are suitable for all dogs over 4 months old, they are preservative and gluten free and a rich source of protein and calcium. Originally made for human consumption and still consumed today by the Himalayan people and their dogs.
What puzzles us at valupets is why these chews are not cheaper, when the ingredients are so basic, they are made from a mixture of skimmed Yak and Cow's Milk, with a small amount of lime juice and salt to harden the milk, which is then compressed into blocks and smoked dried for 28 days to give the chews their distinctive appearance and unique cheesy taste. Yak chews and bars are softer than other natural dog chews such as smoked bones, deer antlers or buffalo horns, allowing them to enjoyed by older dogs too!
Yak chews contain only 5.2% fat, making them a healthier alternative to many dog treats and chews, that are similar to a hard cheese that slowly softens in your mouth, helping a dog remove tartar and plaque build-up around their teeth and gums.
Feeding Guide
Unlike other dog chews, they have a unique trick up their sleeve. Once your dog has reduced the chew to a small piece for example 3 to 4cm in length, place it in the microwave on high for 30 to 60 seconds until it puffs up. Yes, you are reading the directions correctly, but you are probably wondering what will happen to the chew! Just like popcorn the chew will hiss and begin to puff up like popcorn albeit without the popping noise.
Once the microwave has stopped, please allow the dog chew to cool, before giving it back to your dog to finish. Please note the texture of the milk chew changes completely after being in the microwave and will now be a soft, yummy honeycomb treat.Important Info
After reading the description, you may be thinking to yourself isn't salt bad for dogs? Yes, that's correct but in large amounts, just like it is for us too. But the tiny amount used in the bars is less than 0.1% and is only used in conjunction with the lime juice to get the cheese to harden at the very beginning of the manufacturing process.
You next thought might have been, aren't dogs also lactose intolerant. Yes, some dogs are but most aren't and yak chews contain less than 1% lactose. The reason why the level is so low, is that the cream and whey are removed from the milk as part of the manufacturing process making the levels of lactose in the treat very low indeed.
As the chews are 100% natural the shape and size will vary from one to chew to another, this is completely normal.
