Pine Nuts are actually seeds from the cones of pine trees, that are a rich source of food for some cage and aviary birds, but also parrots and have an extremely thick, tough shell which is difficult for most birds to crack. The medium pine nuts we stock are suitable for Canaries, British Finches, Green Finches, Bull Finches as well as other Finch and British bird varieties.
Pine nuts are often found only in premium bird foods and high quality parrot mixes as they are expensive, but are a great treat for medium and large parrots such as African Greys, Conures, Cockatoos and Macaws. We suggest to customers they offer pine nuts to their birds simply as a treat or add them to your favourite parrot or complete bird foods to add extra variety to their diet!
The nuts are rich in calories, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and mono-unsaturated fatty acids that not only are beneficial for birds, but also people as they reduce cholesterol levels in the blood. One reason why pine nuts are relatively expensive is that a pine cone takes approximately 2 - 3 years to mature after pollination of the tree's flowers, before they release their seeds.
Lastly you can purchase pine nuts that are shelled or unshelled, but the unshelled nuts are usually more expensive to buy and consequently often found only in health food stores, rather than included in parrot or bird foods for that reason, but they do have a longer shelf life. However it's more natural for your birds and parrots to crack open the nuts themselves, entertaining to watch and cheaper on your pocket.
