We strongly recommend you always feed peanuts from a high quality peanut feeder, that is secure to prevent large pieces or whole nuts being taken by birds to feed hungry fledglings, which some parents may be tempted to do if natural alternatives such as insects and worms are unavailable, as young birds can choke on them.
You should also never feed peanuts loose from a wild bird table to help prevent choking, but you can safely feed

Peanuts can be infected with a fungus, which produces a poison called aflatoxin, which can be toxic to wild birds if enough is ingested, leading unfortunately to death if levels build up in a bird's body. So we suggest you always store your peanuts in a cool dry location to avoid any problems. Also since there is no clear scientific evidence of what is a safe level for wild birds, we only sell Grade 1, Aflatoxin Premium Safe nuts in bulk bags, unlike some online sellers!
Please note our premium peanuts are always fresh, NOT stale or old nuts that have been stored in warehouse for several months where they could have become infected with toxins, before being sold for wild bird food. What's more freshly harvested peanuts are more nutritious, higher in oils and simply taste better than old nuts that will often develop a bitter taste to them, that bird's find unpleasant and will avoid if other food sources are available. That's why our customers come back to us.
Furthermore we have chosen not to sell standard or basic peanuts only high grade nuts as the calorie content, energy, oil and protein levels aren't as high and therefore not as beneficial for birds, but the country of origin will vary, including the size and colour of the peanuts because of different harvesting periods around the world.
What are the aflatoxin levels for Peanuts sold in the UK?
Aflatoxins levels for peanuts, granules and monkey nuts imported into the UK for wild birds should not exceed 20 parts per billion, whereas levels for human consumption should not exceed two parts per billion, but ironically levels in the USA set by the Food and Drug Administration body for human consumption are the same as the levels set by the food standards agency for wild birds in UK, at 20 parts per billion that apply not just to peanuts but for brazil and pistachio nuts too!
The premium peanuts that we sell for birds in economical 25kg bags are grade 1 nuts, that are Vat Free and usually do not exceed 4 parts per billion, making them extremely safe and well within the acceptable guidelines. For the safety and welfare of your birds, never feed salted or dry roasted peanuts, as most garden birds can't process the high levels of salt and will die.
